The Online Creative Juniors: Sewing for Kids course introduces children aged 6+ to the joy of sewing through a step-by-step, self-paced program guided by friendly tutors from the Kent School of Fashion

Children will learn to use a sewing machine safely, master simple stitches, and complete exciting projects — from a drawstring pouch to a patchwork pillow cover. The course is completely self-paced, allowing families to learn at their own convenience, with tutor support available as needed.

The lessons are taught in the simplest and engaging way to maximise learning for our young designers.


Whether your child dreams of designing clothes, loves making things by hand, or simply enjoys trying new creative skills, this course gives them everything they need to get started — with step-by-step video lessons, downloadable projects, and supportive tutors guiding them along the way.


All lessons are pre-recorded, and a range of fun learning methods are offered, including videos, quizzes, and other creative learning activities. We do know and understand that young people learn in different ways, and we are committed to supporting our young designers to maximise their learning. There is support available for questions and live sessions for young creatives to join in.

Course Details

Module 1: Sewing Machine Basics
Learn about the parts of the sewing machine, how to thread it, wind a bobbin, and practise safe operation. Children will complete a few fun exercises to build control and confidence.


Module 2: Sewing Skills

Practise straight, curved, and corner seams; learn backstitching and seam allowance. Perfect for improving precision and coordination.


Module 3: Drawstring Pouch Project

Make your first real project! Measure, cut, and sew a small drawstring bag — a great way to apply what’s been learned so far.


Module 4: Tote Bag Project

Learn to construct a simple lined tote bag with handles — introducing layering, lining, and topstitching.


Module 5: Patchwork Techniques

Discover how to arrange colours and fabrics, cut squares, and sew them into a beautiful patchwork panel.


Module 6: Pillow Cover Project

Turn your patchwork into a stylish pillow or cushion cover. Practise hemming and finishing techniques — and celebrate your final creation!

When can my young creative start?

You can register them to start now, or anytime in the year.

How does the online course work?

Once enrolled, you will receive immediate access to the learning platform. Your child can watch video lessons, download project sheets, and practise at their own pace. Module include a mix of Step-by-step video tutorials, downloadable patterns and instructions, tutor guidance and feedback options. 
You can log in anytime from a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

What age is this course suitable for?

The course is designed for children aged 6 and above.
Younger learners (6–8) may need a little parental supervision during setup, while older children can work independently. The lessons are structured to suit a wide range of learning speeds and abilities.

Does my child need any previous sewing experience?

No experience is needed at all!
The course starts right from the beginning,  understanding the sewing machine, learning safety and setup, and gradually building up to fun creative projects. Every step is demonstrated clearly in easy-to-follow videos.

How long will it take to complete the course?

The course is completely self-paced — there is no deadline. Most families complete it over 6–8 weeks, doing one module per week or weekend. Others spread it out longer or revisit modules as practice. Your have access for 1 whole year, so your child can return anytime to refresh their skills or remake projects.

Will my child receive a certificate?

Yes!
Every student who completes the course receives a Kent School of Fashion Certificate of Completion, celebrating their new creative skills and achievements.

In the early stages (Modules 1–2), parents should help set up the sewing machine and supervise to ensure safety.
After that, most children enjoy working independently, with occasional help for measuring or ironing.
The course encourages independence — but teamwork makes it even more fun!

This course is led by Tolumi Abiola Oyediji, a Creative Educator and a Fashion Designer with over 2 decades of experience in the industry. With a fashion label and having showcased on Fashion Runways and exhibitions across the UK, Europe, America and Africa, Tolumi brings a wealth of experience and knowledge into her classes. Outside her academic role in higher education, Tolumi enjoys working with young people and passionate about Equality, Inclusion and Diversity, including supporting neurodiversity. 
She is certified in Understanding Autism at Level 3 and also serves as a Mental Health First Aider.
