Small-Group Creative Sewing Sessions for Ages 10–16

SEND Fashion & Sewing (Ages 10–16)

Our SEND Fashion & Sewing Classes are designed for young people aged 10–16 who would enjoy learning sewing, fashion and textile skills in a smaller, calmer and more supported creative environment.

We understand that joining a new class can feel like a big step, especially for young people who may feel anxious in larger groups, need extra processing time, prefer clear routines, or benefit from gentle encouragement and step-by-step support.

These sessions are intentionally kept small, with a maximum of 5 students per group, so each young person has more time, space and support from the tutor. The focus is not on rushing, pressure or producing perfect work. The focus is on confidence, creativity, participation, progress and helping each young person experience the joy of making.

Students will explore fashion, sewing, textiles, fabric, colour, texture and simple creative projects in a way that can be adapted to their pace, confidence and individual needs.

These sessions are intentionally kept small, with a maximum of 5 students per group and 2 tutors trained in understanding neurodiversity, so each young person has more time, space and support needed.
We provide all tools, materials and equipment for class activities, and access to sewing machines during sessions.

Important Suitability Note

This course is an inclusive creative learning programme. It is not a clinical therapy service, specialist SEND school placement, respite service or one-to-one care provision.

The course is delivered in a small group setting with additional support built into the structure. If your child requires continuous one-to-one assistance, personal care support, or support with behaviour that may place themselves or others at risk, please contact us before booking so we can discuss whether the course is suitable.

We want every young person to have a positive and safe experience, so it is important that we understand support needs before the course begins.

What Makes This Course Different?

This is not a standard sewing class with a large group. This SEND Fashion & Sewing Class is designed around:

  • small groups of no more than 5 students
  • clear step-by-step demonstrations
  • visual examples and practical guidance
  • repeated instructions where needed
  • flexible project outcomes
  • calm encouragement and reassurance
  • support with tools, equipment and sewing machines
  • time for students to work at their own pace
  • a focus on confidence and progress, not perfection

We know that every young person is different, so activities may be adapted depending on the needs, confidence and pace of the group.

See some FAQ'S below.

Frequently asked questions

What if my child is anxious?

Please let us know before the course begins. We can discuss what may help them feel more comfortable.

Can the activities be adapted?

Yes. Where possible, activities will be adapted to support different confidence levels, communication needs and learning styles.

Will they be safe with sewing tools?

Students will be guided carefully, and tasks will be adapted depending on their confidence and readiness.

What if my child's pace is very slow?

The sessions are designed to be slower-paced, supportive and flexible. We focus on confidence, participation and progress rather than perfect final outcomes.

Can my child and I visit the school and meet the tutors before the course starts?

Yes. We understand that starting a new class can feel like a big step, especially for young people who may feel anxious in new environments.

Before the course begins in August, we can arrange a short visit for your child to see the space, meet the tutors and become familiar with the studio environment. This can help them feel more comfortable and prepared before their first session.

Parents and carers are welcome to contact us after booking, or before booking if needed, to discuss a suitable visit time.

Does my child need a formal diagnosis to attend?

No. A formal diagnosis is not required. This course is for young people who would benefit from a smaller, calmer and more supported creative learning environment. If you are unsure whether the course is suitable for your child, please contact us before booking.

Meet the Lead Tutor - Tolumi Abiola

Tolumi Abiola is a creative educator, fashion practitioner and the Creative Head of Kent School of Fashion. With over 15 years of experience in sewing, garment construction and creative education, her teaching combines technical skill development with a supportive, industry-informed approach.

Tolumi has taught learners across a wide range of ages and experience levels, from complete beginners to advanced students preparing portfolios for further study and creative careers.

Tolumi is particularly passionate about inclusive creative teaching and creating learning environments where young people feel safe, seen, supported and encouraged. Her teaching combines practical fashion and sewing skills with patience, structure and a nurturing approach, helping students build confidence at their own pace.

As both a creative educator and a parent with lived experience of neurodiversity, Tolumi understands how important it is for young people with additional needs to feel comfortable, understood and not rushed. Her approach focuses on progress over perfection, clear step-by-step guidance, gentle encouragement and adapting creative activities to suit each young person’s confidence, pace and support needs.

Through this SEND Fashion & Sewing course, Tolumi aims to create a calm, welcoming and confidence-building studio experience where young people can explore fashion, fabric and making in a way that feels positive, accessible and enjoyable.
