Corset Construction -
A 6-Session Adventure

This is a technical fashion construction course taught within a supportive small-group studio environment.

With 6 sessions, across 3 weeks, this course for Intermediate- Advanced creatives is everything you need to learn and dive headfirst into the art of corset making, and unleash your inner fashion designer as you craft your own masterpiece. The corset cut and sewing methods will be taught in details, and the skin colour effect for corsets and more as well!

The class will run on Mondays with 2 sessions each (Morning 10am-12.15pm, Afternoon 12.45pm- 3pm) on each day.
What to Expect:
Over the duration of the course, you will explore the foundations of modern corset construction through a combination of demonstrations, guided technical exercises and hands-on making. You will learn professional techniques used within fashion, costume and couture-inspired garment construction while developing your own beautifully finished corsets.

Throughout the course, you will:
  • Learn the structure and principles of corsetry
  • Work with specialist corset materials and components
  • Develop precision sewing and finishing techniques
  • Construct and fit corsets with guidance from your tutor
  • Build confidence working with more advanced fashion construction methods

By the end of the course, you will leave with 2 constructed corsets, stronger technical sewing skills, and a deeper understanding of structured garment design.

With only 6 students, sessions are intentionally small to allow for personalised guidance, individual support and an engaging studio experience.

Frequently asked questions

Is this course suitable for beginners?

No. This course is not suitable for beginners. It has been created for intermediate to advanced sewists, fashion creatives and fashion students who already have previous sewing experience and can complete sewing projects independently from start to finish.
Students should already feel comfortable using a sewing machine and following garment construction processes independently.

What will I make during the course?

Students will create two corsets during the course, An overbust corset and a cupped corset.
First samples will be made in calico fabric for toile in class sessions before recreating their designs in fashion fabric outside of sessions.

Would there be homework outside class sessions?

Yes. This is an intensive course and students will be expected to complete work outside of weekly sessions.
Students will be required to continue constructing their corsets at home using fashion fabric and bring completed stages back to the following session. Independent sewing outside class time is an important part of the course.

Do I need to bring my own Sewing Machine?

No. Sewing machines are available at the school for all participants to use during sessions.

However, if participants prefer to bring and work on their own sewing machine, they are welcome to do so.

What materials are included?

The school will provide:
  • Corset hardware and specialist components
  • Calico fabric for in-class toile construction

Students will need to provide their own fashion fabric for construction work completed outside of class sessions. 
Further fabric guidance and recommendations will be shared before the course begins.

How many students would be in this class?

This is a small-group course with a maximum of 6 students to allow for personalised support, technical guidance and an engaging studio learning experience.

What should I bring to the course?

Students should attend with a full sewing kit, including Dressmaking pins, Tape measure, Fabric scissors, Paper scissors, Marking tools and any additional sewing tools they personally find useful.

Can I keep and wear my Corsets after the course?

Yes. All corsets created during the course belong entirely to the students to keep and wear after the course has finished.

Meet The Tutor- Tolumi Abiola

Tolumi Abiola is a creative educator, fashion practitioner and the Creative Head of Kent School of Fashion. With over 15 years of experience in sewing, garment construction and creative education, her teaching combines technical skill development with a supportive, industry-informed approach.

Tolumi has taught learners across a wide range of ages and experience levels, from complete beginners to advanced students preparing portfolios for further study and creative careers. Her teaching focuses on helping learners build confidence in specialist construction techniques while developing their own creative voice and craftsmanship.

Alongside leading community-based fashion education programmes, Tolumi also lectures in higher education and is particularly passionate about inclusive creative teaching practice. Her work bridges both professional fashion training and accessible community learning, creating an environment where learners feel supported, challenged and inspired.

In this corsetry course, learners will explore both the technical and creative aspects of corset construction, developing skills in structured garment making, fit, finishing and professional sewing techniques within a small-group studio environment.
