At Kent School of Fashion, we believe home-educated young people should have rich opportunities to create, experiment, make, question, collaborate and discover what they are capable of.

Our Home Education programmes give young people access to specialist tutors, professional equipment, creative workspaces and a community of other learners, while maintaining the flexibility and individuality that make home education different.

From fashion, sewing and art to coding, robotics, engineering and creative technology, our programmes are designed to complement home education with the kind of practical, specialist and collaborative learning that can be difficult to recreate at home.

More ways to learn

Home education can give young people greater freedom over how, when and where they learn.
We believe that freedom should also come with more opportunities to explore.

Some subjects are difficult to provide fully at home. Sewing requires equipment and space. Robotics requires specialist kits and technology. Art and design benefit from materials, tools and opportunities to experiment. Young people may also want to learn alongside others who share their interests.

Our Home Education provision has been developed to help fill that gap.
We provide specialist creative and technical learning during the week, designed to sit alongside each family's wider home education journey.

Learning through doing

Our learners do not simply sit and listen.
They design, build, sew, code, draw, test, prototype, take apart and put them back together, make mistakes and try again.

Learning is practical, active and connected to meaningful projects.
We want young people to understand not only what they are learning, but what they can do with it.

Individual, not identical

Home-educated learners come to us with different experiences, interests, abilities and ways of learning.
We do not expect every child to work in exactly the same way, produce exactly the same outcome or progress at exactly the same pace.
Tutors provide structure, demonstrations and clear learning goals while allowing space for individual ideas, exploration and different routes through a project.
There is room to ask questions, spend longer on projects, to move ahead earlier and room to do things differently.

Small, supportive learning environments

We create learning environments where young people can be known as individuals.
Smaller groups allow our tutors to notice when they need another explanation, an additional demonstration, more challenge, a quieter approach or simply more time.
We want them to feel comfortable asking for help, trying unfamiliar things and developing independence gradually.

From exploration to recognised achievement

A creative interest can begin from any of our programmes.
A young person may join us because they want to sew, draw, build something, programme a robot or try a completely new skill.

For some young people, that experience remains an hobby to enjoy while for others, it becomes the beginning of something more.

Through our wider learning pathways, young people can develop increasingly advanced practical skills, create portfolio work, take on independent projects and work towards Arts Award qualifications and other recognised creative learning outcomes. This means families can choose the level of progression that is right for their young person, from enrichment and exploration through to structured, accredited creative learning.

Tell us their age, interests, previous experience and anything that would help us understand how they learn. Our team can help you identify an appropriate starting point and, where relevant, discuss future progression and qualification opportunities.
