Masterclass and Retreats

Make time for your craft

Immersive creative experiences designed for people who want to step beyond everyday classes, explore a subject in greater depth and spend focused time developing their skills.

Our Masterclasses & Retreats bring together specialist teaching, practical making and the space to concentrate on the creativity you love.

Some experiences take place over a single day. Others unfold across several days. You might join us for an intensive masterclass, a seasonal creative retreat or a longer period of making and learning.

However they are structured, the purpose is the same, to give you the time, guidance and environment to go deeper.

Go beyond the everyday class

There are times when you want more than an introduction.
You want to understand a technique properly, more time to practise, ask questions as they arise or work through the details instead of rushing to finish.

Our Masterclasses & Retreats are created for exactly that.
Each experience focuses on a particular area of creative practice, allowing you to develop knowledge, technique and confidence through sustained practical learning.

Masterclasses

Focused learning. Specialist skills.

Our masterclasses are concentrated learning experiences built around a particular technique, process or area of practice.

They may run for a day, several sessions or over a number of days depending on the subject.

Rather than trying to cover everything, each masterclass allows us to focus.

You might explore garment construction, fit, pattern cutting, corsetry, tailoring, textiles, specialist sewing techniques or another area of fashion and creative practice.

You will learn through demonstration, guided practice and hands-on making, with opportunities to ask questions and receive individual support as you work.

Creative Retreats

Time to slow down. Space to make.

Our creative retreats are about creating space away from everyday routines to focus on your practice. They are immersive experiences where learning, making and creative community come together.

A retreat might take place during the week or over several days. It may form part of our summer programme, winter programme or another seasonal experience. While some retreats may focus on developing a particular project, others may offer a broader programme of making, workshops and creative exploration.

The emphasis is on giving you uninterrupted time to work on your craft, learn new techniques, develop ideas, make progress on a project, receive specialist guidance, connect with other creatives and enjoy the process of making.

Learn by doing

Our tutors demonstrate practical techniques, explain processes and work alongside you as you apply what you are learning.

You will not spend the experience simply watching somebody else work, you will be making as well.

Depending on the programme, that might mean sewing, cutting, fitting, drafting, experimenting with materials, developing a design or working through a complete project.

The aim is not simply to complete a project during sessions but to understand the process well enough to use those skills again.

Your Space to Create

We design the sessions to give participants the space and equipment they need to work comfortably.

Depending on the programme, you may have access to:
individual or shared making stations, sewing machines, cutting and pattern-cutting areas, mannequins and specialist equipment, project materials, demonstrations and learning resources

Each individual event page will explain exactly what is provided and anything you need to bring.

Made for the love of making

Our programmes are designed for a range of makers.

Some experiences may be suitable for confident beginners, others are created for intermediate or more experienced participants who are ready to develop specialist skills.

Certain masterclasses may require previous experience, while others may simply ask that you are comfortable with the basic techniques involved.

Every event page will clearly explain the recommended experience level so you can choose the right opportunity for you.

Made alongside others

There is something different about spending focused creative time with people who share your interests. Ideas are exchanged. Techniques are discussed. Someone discovers a solution to a problem. Another person tries something they would never have considered.

There is conversation, encouragement and plenty of discussion about the creativity we love. You are very welcome to attend alone. Many people do. The shared experience of making gives everyone something in common from the moment they arrive.

Different seasons. Different experiences.

Our Masterclasses & Retreats programme changes throughout the year.
You may find:
One-Day Masterclasses - Focused on practical learning around a specialist skill or project.
Multi-Day Masterclasses - More time to explore complex techniques and work through a project in depth.
Season Retreats - Longer creative experiences designed to make the most of time, space and seasonal inspiration.
Specialist Intensives - Concentrated programmes for makers wanting to develop a particular area of technical practice.

Every experience is different and this is part of what makes them special.

“I attended a beginners workshop which allowed me to get familiarised with a sewing machine in just a couple of hours. Tolumi is a fabulous teacher and an all-round ray of sunshine! I left feeling inspired.”
